On Froyo, it seems whatever I do, my SGS is rendered useless if I try to sync with my Google Calendar. Whenever it starts to sync the calendar, all other functions - even making and answering calls takes ages, and syncing never ends. The Google account is on my own domain under Google Apps Business.

I just got the phone and never really ran anything than Froyo, so I can't tell if this was introduced with Froyo. I can sync fine with the Exchange server at work.

To remedy I tried:
-Factory resetting several times
-Removing the 16GB SD card - and Factory resetting again.

When I finally can access the setting to disable sync for the calendar of my Google account, it seems to continue trying to sync, and the only thing I can do is to shut off the phone again and leave it off for at least five minutes before turning it on again. If I turn it on too quickly it will try to sync the Google Calendar again and slow down the whole phone again.

Is this a known issue with a fix?

You can export your google calendar in settings of the calendar, then wipe it, and then try to sync it with the phone, I guess this will help for the time being, then you can import your calendar and try to sync it again. Note: you must be aware that when you export and import your google calendar it won't be exact the same as it was. You will have to spend some time to adjusting it to it's previous state but it will take you for sure less time than entering all agendas manually.. Maybe this will help..

Thanks for your reply brendan. I tried exporting, emptying, syncing, importing and syncing - but the symptoms are the same. The phone actually ends up in a state where I have to remove and reinsert the battery, if I let it try to continue the sync.

Are there any known limitations as to how large your calendar can be? My exported unzipped .ics-file is about 670kb.

Another problem could be that recurring events from way back are not supported? I register birthdays as recurring yearly events starting in the actual birthyear of the person - so my earliest registration is probably sometime in 1914 when my grandmother was born. This has never been a problem with any other calendar platforms - does anyone know if this is an issue in Froyo?

I also tried disconnecting all other imported calendars from my Google account, without any change in behavior.

I've isolated the problem to being within one of my 106 recurring appointments in the calendar. Here's what I did:
1) exported the calendar to a local .ics-file (luckily all recurring appointments are stored at the end of the file)
2) opened the .ics file in a text-editor, backed up and removed all sections containing:

BEGIN:VEVENT
...
RRULE:(something about the recurrence)
...
END:VEVENT

In my case that was the last 106 entries. Remembering to keep the last line in the file:

END:VCALENDAR

3) Emptied my Google Calendar
4) Forced a sync to my SGS and re-imported the new .ics file to the Google Calendar
5) Started up regular sync with Google Calendar again - now without any failures

Does anyone know what kind of stuff I should look for to figure out which of the recurring appointment(s) offend Android?

I am just making suggestions. You could check which frequencies are not available in Google calendar on line and remove those ones.
