Hi all, I have been frustrated with my Galaxy s900i recently de to the battery draining at an alarming rate, even when it is not being used! I went to the store where I purchased the phone and was told it was a network problem and that they have had a large number of people back to the store with the same issue.  The young lad there held the off button until the "phone options" panel came up then switched off "Data Network Mode" He said that there was an upgrade being developed and some android phones are trying to download this upgrade but are unable to due to some fault within the upgrade. This has been happening for two months or so now and it has been kept under wraps which is the annoying part of the problem. All that time Iv'e wasted uninstalling and re installing, checking settings etc., could have been avoided if they had announced their blunder instead of covering it up!

All the store have done is switch off your internet on the phone, as Android is designed to be always on, to provide swift access to internet and internet capable apps. this defeats the purpose.

The only updates the Galaxy S will automatically download OTA will be market apps (if auto update has been ticked). If the Network needs an update to go to the phone, it will have to be included in their release of the Handset firmware which is installed on a PC using Kies.

So I suspect the store may have just given you an alternative means of saving battery instead of finding the real cause.

If you want to try and find out what is causing the drain, the first thing to do is switch the data back on, full charge your phone then use it as normal until it is near empty. Then check the battery usage in Settings > Battery. Here you can see a breakdown of what apps/services etc have been using the battery since it came off charge (shown as a percentage of the overall battery drain).

This will often point you in the right direction of the battery drain.

There are also some apps you can use to save battery life, such as Juice Defender. But I would recomend trying the former steps first to identify where the drain is coming from.

New phone and it is driving me nuts as it goes flat so quick. The battery usage is highest under gpsd, but I don't know what that means, or how to turn it off. Plus I've turned off all sorts of things trying to save the battery now, so is there a way to go back to scratch and reset the phone before I make any more of a hash of it?

Please reply in plain English as a lot of the replies I've seen about this problem (which seems to be widespread) are over my head. Think it would be easier to just go and buy a pidgeon instead.  HUH?

There are some steps to improve your battery life:
- settings
- checking running services.
- a good kernel
- Thunderbolt scripts.

I went in to the Verizon store and they did a factory reset on the phone, and told me to see how it far (2 wk) working great
I do not want to text or do email on my phone, but I do use a navigator and weather all the time.
Greatly improved so far!
