I have this particular problem with APN on/off and wonder if it's the phone or my network problem. First of all, it doesn't matter which widget I use, they are basically the same, do the same, react the same. And all of them just work well.
Here comes the problem. If I turn APN off too long (like more than 1 or 2 hours), there's no way to get 3G back at all, except for a reboot ! It's obviously not the program/widgets fault, so I wonder if it's the Galaxy itself (i9000) or if it's my network that won't let me connect back.

BTW, there is a reliable way for me to turn off 3G and turn it back on after a while, and that's to turn off and turn on Roaming (because my network is designed like that), but as you might know, that's about 8 to 10 moves per on/off switch, and a widget on the home screen is almost instantly.

Assuming the coincidence we're on the same network too far fetched (NL KPN/Telfort), we can conclude with great probability that it's a problem in the Android system or one of Samsung's core modifications. Hope the update in Sept. will solve this.

I had the same problem initially but strangely, the problem went away automatically. Perhaps, you can try waiting abit longer before you reboot your Galaxy. Sometimes, it does take a while (1-2 mins) before the phone re-establish the 3G connection.

Hmm...that's odd. I normally have mine off all the time using the APN On/Off Widget since I normally sync via wifi only. But whenever I turn it on, I instantly get hsdpa or 3G (where available). Maybe it's a carrier issue since I also have an i9000. It's been like that ever since I got the phone a month ago.

I'm not sure how to fix that problem completely (I don't have it) but I heard an easier way to get connectivity back than a reboot is to enable and disable airplane mode.

Airplane mode enable/disable is what I thought of myself, however, strangely it doesn't help, only full reboot.

As for waiting a bit before the real data is sent (because the icon is always there, just no data), too bad it's not just 1 or 2 minutes, it's more like 20 to 30 minutes, which makes the instant access to APN on/off useless.

Because there are people who don't have this problem, maybe it's firmware related (too bad through Samsung KIES it states there no update, even though I read messages online there is), or that I'm constantly on a roaming profile (by design).

I may have had the same problem but I turned off and on my WiFi to resolve it. When I turn on WiFi it turns off my APN data

Agree with Casz.  An APN won't coma back if you have Wi-fi on (as I the device will always use Wi-fi in preference over a cellular connection).  I think the bug with the Galaxy S is that the Wifi still has precedence even when Wifi is on, but not even connected.  Turning off Wi-fi brings back the cellular connection in about a minute.

Seemed like a tip to try out, because it's easy to tell the default preference where wi-fi precedes 3G, as it's only logical. It seemed like it was this bug after all.

But it's NOT practical. Why do I need 3G ? Because I'm AWAY from my wi-fi.

How DO you get 3G back, ONLY by turning on Wi-fi, connecting to  Wi-Fi, then disconnect again, while 3G is on. Precedence rules will be reset to good order.

However, the most common situation is, you're somewhere else with no Wi-Fi in sight, when you enable Wi-Fi, it does NOTHING (because there's no network to connect to). This tip is only valid when you have Wi-Fi you can connect to. Without the valid connection, the bug stays where it is.

So, still waiting for Froyo it is then.

You don't have to connect to anything, just turn on the WiFi. Don't know if it would work by switching airplane mode off and on. I just did that with my Omnia2

Eeeh, I wouldn't have such an elaborate reply if I didn't try all of that yet. So again, on the Galaxy S, it's NOT a solution.

Hmm, didn't review your entire reply (or question apparently). The problem would seem to be more with the roaming aspect of your APN.  That aside, since you have a reliable method, what about just cutting down on steps to get there. What about if you hold on the screen and select Shortcuts. Scroll down and select Settings. A list of settings comes up. Is one of the choices a quick access to the roam feature you turn on and off?

I just did all these things on my SGS so the options are available on my version of the Galaxy S. Your version may not have it seems.

Nopz, mine does not have that as a shortcut. Updated firmware to JM2, slightly better. But still causes this problem sometimes (and no, still, turn on Wifi when none is available, or Flight mode, doesn't resolve it), having to wait for a full power off/on cycle before I can have 3G on the go.
