Does anyone know if the Samsung Galaxy S will be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich? Can I update it myself by rooting my phone?

My phone is only a few months old but is still running on Froyo (2.2), and current press releases seem to indicate that upgrades will only be available to phones running on Gingerbread (2.3).  If I can’t update from 2.2 to 4.0 now, would it help if I rooted it to get 2.3 and is that recommended?

Samsung have advised they are not going to be releasing ICS for the original Galaxy S,  due to hardware limitations. They were going to release a value pack updated, which was supposed to bring the phone as close to ICS as possible while staying on Gingerbread,  but looks like they have changed their minds on this too.

Either way, I would still recommend updating to Gingerbread as it is better than froyo on battery life and lag issues.
