How to set Google account on the phone?

I have a Galaxy S GT-i9000.
Firmware version: 2.1 update 1
Baseband version: I9000XXJM1
Kernel version: 2.6.29
                     root@SE-S603 #2
I cannot set up my google account on the phone. When I give my user details, I am told "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server. This could be e temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services."

It is not a vendor or internet connection problem. What can it be? Any help will be much appreciated.

Coming to my problem, I have tried wi-fi. That doesn't work. Somebody said that maybe updating my phone to 2.3 gingerbread could solve the problem. But I don't know where to start.
