Gingerbread is supposed to be coming for Galaxy by June. (Earliest speculation says March but on the safe side I say June).

While HTC is coming out with a new device with 2.4 in February or March  Shocked
Meanwhile 3.0 is coming out by May.

This seems like a marketing game where new is better, this is looking like quantity over quality battle, where each manufacturer is dishing out a newer and fancier version of OS with each big release.

This is worrying news as this may cut in the time for testing. Testing is what takes 70% of the time when developing. Unless they have found a new Development model this is bad news in the long run.

I mean 3 new OS versions in 6 months 2.3 just got released, 2.4 is coming in a month or 2 and 3.0 in 5 months. All while we wait for 2.3 and some even for 2.2.

On a Plus note (or negative): This may make a big dent on the Apple heads. Where Android OS is the new bling bling.

Source.

Peace.

Possibly the SGS will get an official update. Manufacturers should not try to fulfill rumours. Samsung has not announced the SGS would be upgraded past 2.2. If you want the device that will be updated constantly get the non-branded google phone.

I agree with IronSingh that the fast upgrade cycle creates problems with testing for existing users. Not everyone want to use custom ROMs. The mitigating factor that I see is the people who are satisfied with their device (the majority) will not miss the updates. Samsung said the SGS would be upgraded to 2.2 and for most of the world that is true. Users will either buy new devices or go to custom ROMs.

I think that the sgs will keep getting updated up to a certain point. I mean Im not sure samsung will keep supporting the sgs once they roll-out phones with multicore processors and 3d displays.

Whats odd tho is that samsungs still producing android 1.6 phones. Thats a huge step down from even what were running now.

It is weird to be putting out 1.6 devices.

And I think we'll be able to update our Galaxy S ROMs for a long time. Just if it's not a i9000 it will be less official Kiss

My SGS IS unbranded. Why should I buy the Google phone (whatzits? the Nexus??) which was a worse phone? It's not the carrier that's the problem, it's who makes the phones... We'll see. Not 100% happy with my Samsung, when I needed it (as a phone...) it definitely wasn't there and I was wishing for a 20 Euro Nokia (ick!). So...yes, they may as well upgrade the SGS, many MANY glitches in it...

Correction, I believe Honeycomb is supposed to be 3.0... also, I highly doubt the Galaxy will be getting a Honeycomb update.... I mean, I have a T-959 (SGS: Vibrant), and we here in the US are STILL waiting on FroYo to officially come over the air... which is what drove me to finally just ROOT my phone and flash a ROM *best decision ever*. I think it IS a marketing ploy... I mean, why would Samsung build the Nexus S with 2.3 pre-installed and NOT even take the time to port it over to phones running identical hardware? Those of us who ROOT though should be just fine... seeing as how anytime a new version of Android comes out, there will be hackers ready to port it over for the rest of us  Big Grin  Big Grin  Big Grin  Big Grin

Hello ooblueoo,

This thread wasn't about whether the next update is 2.4 or 3.0.

It makes more marketing sense that the next update is going to be 2.4 but it doesn't really matter.

OTA on the Galaxy S is a bit of a myth to be honest. Most threads I read about Froyo for US involve Mini Kies. By this I mean official Updates have taken place for the U.S. but by OTA I don't know.

As for your comment on identical hardware, the i9000 and i9100 are different the biggest proof being the need to port Gingerbread to the i9000.

if the Nexus S and the i9000 were identical then there would be no need to port.

On another note, carriers are responsible for the update for their specific regions, Samsung will provide a operational ROM to all it's carriers. As far as Samsung is concerned it provided a Froyo update to it's devices. Still flashing a custom ROM is probably what I would have done either way.

If I read your signature right, it states you are running Honeycomb from a Nexus S Rom HUH?

Peace.

If you download the Android sdk off of the Android Dev site they send you a little preview of Honeycomb it's not much but it looks pretty good. When you download the package you need to install the tools package first and then the Honeycomb Preview should come with it or in another package. Wink Wink

Can you use it on the Emulator provided for testing purposes? or Can you patch it on to your phone.

Peace.

I don't know about the emulator but I am pretty sure you can't run it on the phone.

Oh and the files for Honeycomb should be in the Temp folder under the android sdk folder.

Yeah When I saw this thread I forgot the Code names as well.

HoneyComb is 2.4 Gingerbread is 2.3

Nexus S is Gingerbread.

I realized this after a 5 min pause because I was thinking what you were thinking as well hehe.

Peace.
