Having a problem with the phone not ringing when receiving a call. The display comes on and shows that a voice call is happening but the ringtone is not playing. It doesn't happen all the time but enough for it to be annoying. I am using one of the default ringtones.

Any ideas?

Even if the phone doesn't ring initially, does it ring eventually if you leave it alone or are you saying that it doesn't ring at all?

No it doesn't ring at all - usually the first I know about it is when I get an SMS from my voicemail telling me that someone has left me a message - the messaging notification works, just not the voice call notification.

Wait, let me see if I understand you: you find out you have a voice call when you get an SMS saying you have voicemail?

Do you have your phone setup so that all calls get routed to voicemail IF you don't have signal? Because if your phone is setup this way and you get a call when you have intermittent signal, calls will really get routed directly to your voicemail.

You can test this by going to a site where you have strong signal, get your hands on another phone and call yourself a few times and try doing so in a place with intermittent signal, most probably some of your calls will get routed to voicemail.

I see what you mean, but I'm not sure that this is the case. In one instance I could see the incoming voice call animation being played but there was no sound. I'll turn off the forward when unreachable for a while and test it.

Just tested it again, no good - the screen came on and the voice call animation played but no sound Crying

Edit: it looks like it is having trouble coming out of lock mode. When it hasn't been used for a while the screen goes off and then you need to swipe the screen to come out of lock mode - I wonder if I can disable lock mode somehow?

That is odd.

Have you tried experimenting with tones/volumes/vibrate? Does it make any difference?

Either way, I suggest you bring it to an authorized service center. Just demonstrate the problem to them, I'm sure they can help you out.

I have tried just about every combination possible, to no avail. Unfortunately my nearest service agent is around 1,300 km away Crying

I see.

If you're willing to try things out, you could backup your stuff and do a factory reset. If it's a software bug, maybe that will straighten things out.

Go to settings>privacy>factory reset

Yes I tried that earlier. I have been seeing a few reports that this issue is common with firmware 2.2. As soon as I can find the download fix for international phones, i.e. for a GT-I9000 with no letter at the end I'm going to try that. Once I can get into download mode I will look at updating the firmware to 2.2.1.

Edit: ok, applied the 3 button fix successfully and can now get into download mode - now to look for a 2.2.1 firmware

Ok, I may have resolved this one - need a few more days testing before I can be sure though. I did a factory reset, rooted, applied oclf, and then selectively restored my apps, just the bare minimum. I think that it may have been caused by a wayward app and I'm betting that it is one of the memory/task managers.

I'll post back in a few days to confirm.

well, 3 days on I can now confirm that my problem is solved, so if your SGS stops ringing look for a misbehaving app.
