I was able to solve this problem for Galaxy S Vibrant as follows:

1. Install Kies software on computer (mine is a Windows 7 64 bit PC.
2. Unplug the Galaxy S from the USB.
3. Go to Home>Settings>Applications>USB settings and select "Samsung Kies"
4. Go back to Home and plug in the USB

Kies will launch on the phone as soon as the USB is plugged in and a USB connector symbol will appear and the computer will now see your phone and allow you to transfer files, just as to any other drive.   You can set your computer to automatically take a default action when it sees the Galaxy.  For example, I set mine to autoupload photos when it connects, as that is mostly what I want transferred.  Very slick, as it uploads only photos not previously uploaded so it goes very smoothly and quickly.  To confirm it is there, go on your computer to Start>Computer and you should see your phone listed.  On my Windows 7 it appears under Portable Devices, by default as SGT959, or other name of your mobile phone.  You can then access either SD card or phone card.

Once you do this you will see it works superbly.  When you want to turn off Kies to do other things with your Galaxy, just hit the Home icon on your phone and Kies is deactivated.  To reactivate simply unplug the USB and plug it in again.
