do you connect in mass storage or kies.?
try this ...
settings >> wireless and networks >>usb settings >> here select mass storage.

after that try to connect and see if your phone is recognised by the pc/laptop

Hey tjr730.

Are you using the proper samsung cable? And have you tried it with USB DEBUGGING on?

SETTINGS->APPLICATIONS->DEVELOPMENT->USB DEBUGGING

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS take advantage of having Google on your phone! Save all contacts to GMail and they never get lost, wiped, replaced etc.

Titanium Backup for apps and data. SMS Backup & Restore for messages.

I have tried the supplied cable in the box, I've tried the universal cables, nothing seems to work. All it does is charge my phone. I didnt get a USB icon once when I plugged into a wall charger, I have no explination for that!

Debugging on or off it doesnt matter, still wont recognize. I wanted to update to 2.2 or 2.3 Froyo but it doesnt look like thats ever gonna happen at this point.

had you been able to connect previously.

maybe you should try doing a hard reset. backup your files and try a reset., see if that works.

I have never connected it to a pc. What are the system requirements for it? I vave Vista @ work and W7 @ home. Maybe I need an older windows OS for it to work?

i don't this that either vista or win7 is an issue, especially if your using the latest version of KIES.
maybe you should try starting the kies on the c first then connect
or
download kies air from samsung and try connecting
or last resort would be
a reset.
let me know what happens .

I wouldn't suggest using Kies, I think they're still working on the kinks. You can connect the SGS1 as if it were a EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE or USB MEMORY STICK. I think uyou may need to check your cable drivers?
