I downloaded the latest Kies version (Kies_2.0.0.11044_11_3.exe) from the Samsung website.
Upon executing it starts to run (see attach 1) , but after a while I get a message that it needs to remove the older version of Kies before it can update. (see attach 2)
Its in Dutch but basically it says it needs to de-install the older version of Kies before it can install the new version.

I answer YES and it restarts, but comes back to that message after a while.

I have cleaned up everything except the Kies 2.0  registry entries (either with the Kies uninstaller or manually) but it still won't go past that YES/NO question.

Any thoughts on how I should proceed?

You can use another method: Odin or Heimdall.

Thanks but I tried and can't get my Galaxy S in download mode. I think I have one of those devices where it is impossible to do so. Embarrased

•Switch your phone off. To confirm Remove the Battery.

I'm guessing you have to put the battery back in to enter download mode? It does not specify ?

I got it rooted (thanks to the explication on this forum) which is a first step.

I now am taking a backup using Titanium BAckup and will check out your xda link on how to further proceed.

I have one of the Belgian Proximus models which seem to be famous for their lacking 3-button combo

If I use the adb reboot download command I get the download screen (the yellow android)
Does this mean that it actually is in download mode (so without using the 3 button trick)  and can I then push the new updates to my Galaxy ?

Yes, but you have to get to download mode using 3 button combo,too!
Without using the 3 button combo, DON'T flash anything!

Have you downloaded the adb?
If yes, try this:

unplug the cable from the PC.
Turn off your phone by removal the battery.
Close Odin.
Open Odin.
Insert the battery again.
Turn on your phone.
Connect your phone to the PC (Plug the cable to the PC).
Repeat the procedure.

Last try before JIG:
to download mode:
turn off your phone and wait 1 min.
Now you need to start your phone in download mode. To do this press and hold the VOLUME DOWN, HOME and POWER buttons together, and you should see the picture of the Android on a yellow triangle with the message ""Downloading... Do not turn off Target!!!" below it.

Got the S back from Proximus. They unbricked it and installed froyo on it. Me Happy.
Got an SII which works like lightning. Me Happy.
Kies still won't install. Me not Happy .

Oh well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad Wink Wink
