I have this...

So you have both a wired LAN port and a Wireless Adapter? And it seems like you're using the wireless adapter?

Could you try this: Use the wired LAN port for your Internet connection, open the Windows Device Manager, locate your wireless LAN adapter and disable it. Reboot the machine. Then try "tracert msupdate.emodio.com" again.

I spoke to BT Broadband technical support, they told me to email postmaster at yahoo.com, who has said they'll respond within 24 hours, I am not optimistic.

I used a public proxy server, and was then able to access www.emodio.com, however running the install programme while the connection was open did not work.

I am considering looking into channelling all my internet traffic through a proxy server, but I am still looking into how that will work.

Thank you robert_s, you seem very knowledgeable, thanks for your help so far.

I had severe problems downloading any samsung software or firmware over the last week. When I click on an item to download, the samsung download site opens a new tab then times out.

I managed to get Kies downloaded at work, but when I try to install it at home, the Kies installer gets to step 3, then up pops a dialog box telling me "Cannot access the file server, Please check network settings". When I click the ironically named "OK" button  the installation aborts.

I'm running Vista 32 with AVG Free 9. I've disabled the firewall and windows defender and the intrusive bits of AVG, no change in result. It's like the install programme is contacting the samsung website which times out, so it goes off and sulks.

Any ideas anyone?

I had the same problem. So, I uninstalled my AVG and tried installing Kies. It brought me to Step 4! =)

Uninstalling AVG didn't do any good for me. BT help line fobbed me off with telling me to email my problem to postmaster@yahoo.com - there's some sort of tie up there, but it's not clear to me.

If I open up a public proxy server, I can access msupdate.emodio.com and get the forbidden page, but I don't know how to force kies to use that route. My PC has stopped recognising the phone, so I can't share the phone's internet connection with the pc. I'm stuck.

Finally found the USB setup menu, it's under Settings/About Phone if anyone hasn't found it yet.

Selecting Media Player let me see the phone in My Computer and browse it.

Selecting Mass Storage removed the phone and showed two extra disk drives in My computer (phone and card). Pull down status blind and select USB allowed me to mount the hone and get at it that way.

So far so good.

Next, I'll set up an internet connection on the phone and try and share it to the PC, hopefully that will let me complete the Kies install.

Setting up the phone to browse the internet was easy, then I disconnected my wireless connection on my PC and set the phone to access point mode.
I connected on the first try, but the internet access didn't share, and when it started working a couple of minutes later I realised that the PC had reconnected to the domestic wireless network.
On second attempt I managed to connect to the internet hrough the phone, and Kies found the website going onto step 4.
It proceeded to download software, and one or two bits failed, but the install completed and appears to be working properly.
I've even managed to update the phone firmware through Kies, and am currently loading media on.
I think this phone might work out afterall.

Hi guy,

I now can connect the kies from my laptop to the galaxy s.

Go to setting, select about phone, select either mass or kies storage (both work for me)

Plug the usb cable to the laptop or pc.

Then slide the top of the screen down (where is normally show Wi-Fi, bluetooth, silent and vibration) and now you will see ongoing on the screen which show USB connected.

Now press the "USB connected" and you will see the message and said "you have connected your phone to your computer via USB. Select "Mount" if you want to copy files between your comopyuter and your phone's SD card.",
press Mount.

Now you should be able to transfer file between the pc and galaxy s.

It works for both Kies and Mass Storage with internal and external SD card Mounted

Revo uninstaller pro. I can't remember where I got it, google it.

Don't forget to clear your temp directories of the unpacked kies installer files, they won't be cleared by any un-installer because they aren't installed programmes.
