Hey all,
just spent most of last night getting KIES installed and recognising my sgs on XP running through a Linux VirtualBox (virtual machine emulator which allows me to run windows in Ubuntu Linux).

For info on how i did this feel free to contact me through this forum

I am running kies_1.5.1.10083, which i downloaded.

The XP install connects to the internet fine (ie internet explorer works as i'm on it now), though it is a little slow. However when i try to update the kies software, when prompted, i get a message saying that there is no internet connection. I have tried through wireless, ethernet cable and even through the pc internet option when connecting the phone via usb.

Any ideas? does the connection need to be a particular speed for KIES to be able to download updates (and hopefully an upgrade to 2.2)?

This happened to me as well using wifi. When I plugged directly via LAN, Kies downloaded the update.

Another user on another forum used another internet connection as well, I think it was one of those mobile 3G connections that was used.

I suggest you experiment and see what works for you.

Thanks Lorsban,

I tried all other incantations of internet connections and no dice...

like so many others, I only want to do an update, in order to be able to upgrade to 2.2, otherwise i don't need KIES.

But if KIES cannot connect to the internet, then the upgrade will not be available to me anyway, so....

Is there another way to upgrade to 2.2 legit, or will i have to attempt more risky flashing (which i don't really understand)?

Where did you bought your Galaxy?

Is it possible for you to go to any Samsung Service Center to update the Firmware?

Yes, many people are having problem connecting to Kies, so the best (and safer) way is to let Samsung, or even Optus, to update it for you.

The update shouldn't take too long and it's free.

After of about 2 hours and many tries I finally managed to get Kies to work and to find my usb port. Now when I go to do an update to get froyo the damn thing says there is no internet connection when there clearly is!

I'm getting frustrated to no end about this kies program.

Any ideas on how to "fix" the no internet found error? I'm using bell dsl.

i eventually gotkies to connect to the internet by downloading the latest versin from samsung and installing it.
it worked for the first time but only if i did everyhting with kid gloves , and even then it was very slow.

finally i attempted to upgrade and the damn program would freeze half way through. on second attempt the phone did not turn back on and i was left with dead phone!

i gave up on keys all together then and followed instructions and downloaded the rom for my area (aus) from xda-developers website, and flashed the rom directly to the phone mysefl using Odin.

There are web pages telling you how to do this, and follow the instructions on the xda web site carefully.

free yourself of that horrible keys program (and do a factory reset immediately after flashing or upgrading as this irons out bugs which may appear later. - very important) good luck.

On Windows 7 it showed that it couldn't connect to the internet, which I thought was odd since it used the internet to figure out that an update was available. I tried again, and then it went through. Slowly downloading 2.2 now  Sticking out tongue
