Can't Connect to Kies

Using the 0.5 m cable here also, but same problem. Have Googled around for some alternative software, but it seems there are none... 

I spent a whole evening trying to get the USB port to work with SGS and Kies under XP SP3.

In the end it turned out to be a problem with Windows.

All I had to do was plug in the SGS to the USB port. Then windows would give me the three pips saying 'USB device found but not operational'.
 
I went into device manager and uninstalled the USB device that had the exclamation mark beside it.
Then disconnected and reconnected the phone. Once prompted all I then had to do was direct windows to find the driver in c:\windows\inf and it installed ok...

Was having similar problems connecting my phone to Kies (XP SP3)

Try this;

1) Launch Kies on the PC

2) With the phone USB cable unplugged, select USB debugging mode. Leave the phone on this screen.

Hint - Press the Menu key, 'Settings', 'Applications', 'Development', select 'USB debugging' then 'OK' when prompted. Leave the phone on this screen.

3) Plug in the USB cable.

Kies will display 'Connecting to device...' then followed shortly by the message 'Cannot connect in debugging mode.etc.' The message disappears after a couple of seconds.

4) Press the back key twice and select 'About phone' then 'USB settings'. Select 'OK' when prompted.

5) Select 'Samsung Kies' from the options. Select 'OK' when prompted but DO NOT unplug the USB cable.

Kies should now show your phone with all the features available including external SD card. You can use the back key to go to the phne home screen if you want.

P.S. This method has only been tested with XP but may hopefully work on other OS. Also I didn't need to exit LauncherPro! which may be a first.

Have Windows XP SP3 installed.

Installed Kies_1.5.1.10071_32.exe which worked.  Recieved message to say that update available. Installed.  Kies stopped working resulting in MTP Application constantly looping and Kies never connecting.

Solution:

On phone while unplugged from PC, went to settings --> Applications --> Developer Settings --> enabled USB Debug.

Connected phone via USB

stopped the MTP Application by pushing the home key at the right moment.

Went into the notification area and selected the USB message to mount it as a drive

Searched the main onboard memory for *Cache*.* and deleted/cu & Paste to temp folder on PC everything found in these folders.

As my phone is a Samsung, also went through each folder on the phone to see if there were any files with an extension greater than 16 characters (ie file.1234567890123456).  If there were any files like this, either removed the associated software or cut and pasted the files to a temp folder on my PC.

Disconnected the phone

Downloaded new version of Kies (Kies_1.5.1.10074_2_6.exe)

Attempted install found it kept erroring while attempting to Download/install an outlook 2007 addin.  Searched for the files that it thought it was missing. found them at:

Installed them all

Uninstalled kies and anything else samsung related in windows add remove programs

Ran the new installer for Samsung Kies (Kies_1.5.1.10074_2_6.exe) and found that this time it went through really quickly with no error messages.

Rebooted the phone opened Kies and connected my samsung device via USB cable and found it connected first time no problems.

I think a crucial part of the Kies problem is getting the version for your region. Finally got connected to kies by downloading the version from the Bell website (I am in Canada); removed the long files names (using the arvindgaba's utility). Voila, kies worked. Of course I was so excited that I flashed my ROM without doing a backup. Yikes! Oh well, what else is there to do on a cold Sunday afternoon.

While I was doing the main data transfer I just stuck my SD card into my computer to move files. Once you get kies working it *does* pop up when you plug in the device.
