Hi to all,

I,ve found a way to settle this problem... No need to mount or unmount anything... At first i updated my KIES also cannot.. So what i do is i downloaded the Samsung Galaxy S USB driver from http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86-Download-96692.html (i,m a Vista user) P/S: Download the correct windows to avoid error... So i install it, they will said that there is a previous driver available but i overwrite it n waited bout approx 15 mins.. Before that they said MTP Device driver not found... But after that i installed & restarted my pc n wow it can detect... After that i upgrade my Galaxy S to FROYO 2.2... 2.2 was awesome... Stable n those changes reli make me love my Galaxy more...

HOPE CAN HELP U GUYS... Anything can ask me.. Cheers.. I,m a NEWBIE anyway... LOL

Hm.. There seems to be many solutions, so here's mine (worked for me and several other guys) :p.

This may work if you have the problem with MTP Application (it keeps opening and closing) or you cannot install the MTP Application and ANDROID_phone (I think) driver.

1. Mount your SD Card to your PC (Settings > Wireless and network (2.2) or About phone (2.1) > USB Settings > Mass Storage).
2. Search every file in your SD Card for files which have 16 or more characters after the '.' For example, filename.1234567890123456, after the '.' there is 16 characters (the 12345...456) and delete them. Remember to back them up first, though.
3. After that, set your phone to Kies mode (Settings > Wireless and network (2.2) or About phone (2.1) > USB Settings > Samsung Kies) and reconnect the USB cable to your phone, and the drivers should install.

Hope it helps Happy

folks, this seems more a simple USB driver management issue.

i got it all fixed and working via gleff's simple methods to refresh the USB drivers:
http://www.blog.gleff.com/2010/07/fix-for-kies-not-connecting-to-galaxy-s/

while the samsung service staffs are not too bad with the phones per se, they are generally weak with regard to PC interfaces. most of the time, they do not know what they are talking about.

Hi All

OK so my first post about this was nearly a month ago...  Over that time, I found a very long and drawn out way to *sometimes* get my phone to connect to Kies.

I would:
- Format the internal sd (which got rid of any files with >16 character extensions) and put the phone's USB settings to 'Ask on connection'
- Uninstall Kies using Samsung's software
- Re-install Kies
- Replace the drivers with ones downloaded from softpedia
- Plug in the phone, selecting Mass storage mode
- Kies opens and updates itself
- Unplug phone and close Kies
- Plug in phone, selecting Kies mode

After doing that, some of the time the phone would connect to Kies.  The rest of the time, the phone just sat in the MTP Application screen saying 'Connected' and Kies just says 'Connecting the device... Please wait' and I'd have to start back from the beginning.

When it did connect, I would try to update the firmware.  It always hit a problem half way through - the error said "failed to convert to upgrade mode" and the phone would be stuck in that yellow 'do not turn off target' screen.  I would have to pull the battery and try all over again.

After doing that process over and over and over again, I finally gave up and put it all aside for a while.

I came back to work and thought I'd give it one more try.  I tried on a work computer; just downloaded Kies and plugged in my phone in Kies mode.  And it just WORKED- no messing around with drivers, formatting the sd card, nothing.

I have no idea what could have been wrong with my previous computer, but all I can say is, if you have another computer handy, just give it a shot.

Oh, and thank you to everyone for all your help and suggestions!

I have called Samsung 4 times now to get Kies recognized on my pc....and NONE of their suggestions have worked. First I had to upgrade msframework to either 3.5 or 4 I have 4 now...then I had to unistall and reinstall the regular way and then going through a series of links through My Computer, then I had to unistall itunes and again reinstall Kies. NOTHING WORKS!!!! THis software is a piece of rubbish and am now selling my samsung if someone is stupid enough to buy it and going with what I should have gone for first the iphone 4....after reading through the MANY posts on how many people can't install a simple or what should be a simple piece of software without going through hoops of fire, Samsung should be ashamed of themselves!   Angry

Have you tries the new Kies from official Page?

Recommend using the uninstaller first.

I agree Kies is rubbish, but Iphone doesn't have anything over the galaxy S.

Peace.

After a few months of trying everyone's solutions, numerous installs and uninstalls, crashing my computer, crashing my phone - my Samsung Galaxy I896 magically connects on my OLD computer - Vista 32 bit.  Kies 1.5X can also find it.  Now, after all this work, I find that Kies 1.5 does not fully support I896 and will not install apps from their online store.  All Kies 1.5X can do is upgrade android from 2.1 to 2.2.

What a waste of time and effort for nothing.  Kies is useless.  I just sync to my Google account for my contact / calendar backup.

Ahhh, I am not sure what to do.

I would help you if I know what you are trying to do. unless of-course you are just venting, which is fine, I do my share on this forum.

But if you need help please be more constructive.

For one it would help to detail what you did so far?
It is not clear what you mean by "Now, after all this work, I find that Kies 1.5 does not fully support I896 "

As far as I know the I896 comes with 2.1 so Upgrading to 2.2 is a logical step.
(Which is also not clear have you upgraded or not)

Have you tried the New Kies 2.0? or Kies Mini? (Kies Mini is just for Upgrading)

If you have given up on Kies would you be interested in Looking at other options namely flashing?
(Ofcourse this is only if you have not yet updated to 2.2).

Or are you saying that your beef with Kies is due to you not being able to purchase something from the Samsung store? (Many people will gladly switch with you, at least you can upgrade. I agree Kies is Bull Crap).
Did you try the Samsung Apps in the Phone? or Maybe check the market for an alternative.

Please elaborate..

Peace.

I have totally given up on connecting to Kies. So have decided to connect my phone to my pc/laptop as a either a USB storage device or a Removable (Hard) Drive. To do this, so that you can add/delete data on your phone, do the following (it worked for me):

1. Go to "Settings"
2. Choose "About Phone"
3. Choose "USB Settings"
4. Select "Ask on connection"

This will then ask you to "MOUNT" your sdcard so that you can access your files on the pc/laptop. Select "MOUNT". Your PC will then recognise your android device as a removable drive and you are then able to connect & access the data on the phone. I first chose "Mass Storage" at stage 4 in the procedure described above but it failed to recognise the device. By selecting "Ask on connection", my guess is that the phone switches back to "Mass Storage" automatically and therefore is recognisable by both the PC and the device.
I hope this works for you if you have so far failed to access the data on your phone.

Sorry to hear about your kies troubles,

You are not alone.

There have been many success stories when trying different computers.

Have you tried that?

Peace.

I have given up trying to force my Samsung Galaxy I896 to connect to Windows 7 64. I am tired of the game Samsung and Microsoft are playing with this.  Obviously they are at war.  At first I was ticked, but I adapted, and now i like being Windows-Free with my phone.

I exported all my MS-Outlook contacts to GMail.  Samsung and GMail are meant to connect and having all my contacts and emails in the 'cloud' is actually far better than synchronizing by USB to Outlook with an old-fashioned plug.  GMail works good, Google Calender works good.  It is actually better now.

No more USB plugs and worrying about being out of sync.  The 'Cloud' is the future and Microsoft is becoming obsolete due their own inaction.

Hi all,

I have all contacts,   in auto sync with GMail.
It worked ok until yesterday.

Now Calendar,   sync ok, but when the Contacts are in the sync process, the phone vibrates, then blocks, and after around 10s it vibrates again and I get the messase:
"SORRY
process.com.google.process.gapps
has stoped. Try again."

What can be wrong?
How do I solve it.

I've made the usual Power Off/On.
