Tried some stuff to get this thing resolved and got a bit further than last time i think...

1. uninstal all the stuff from Samsung at "programs and features" in windows. This probably means "Kies" & "Samsung USB drivers for mobile phones". This way you get a clean install of all the stuff from samsung.
2. Restart computer. While your waiting for this, get your phone and go to Settings > about phone > USB settings and set it to Ask when connecting (or something like that).
Install Kies (I had version 1.5.1.10071_32).
(if you have a 64-bit system you should install this before kies
http://www.2shared.com/file/y_XR2tT9/usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.html
By clicking at Save File to PC at bottom of the sreen.
I have a 32-bit Vista system so this drivers doesnt help me but might help others.
3. After Kies (and the 64-bit driver) is installed dont start it and restart your computer.
4. While waiting for your system to restart get your phone and unmount your internal SD card in Android @ Settings > SD and memory (or some sorts). You can skip the rest of this step if this is your first time unmounting internal sd card in android. If problem keeps acting up (with me it did) format it. Won't do much harm. Will delete some cache files unless you put something on there. In which case this will be deleted as well. I just backed up my background image that was on there.
5. After that remount your sd card and restart your phone. (this should resolve the flickering issue when trying to connect to kies)
6. When your computer has restarted open up kies and check for an update (probably won't be any.
7. When your phone is done rebooting connect it to your computer with Kies opened. Choose "mass storage" on your phone and let Windows install some drivers and stuff. Dont forget to slide down your android task bar and really connect your phone by clicking on the USB connected and mount the stuff. (this way you can at least acces your files in windows like an USB stick.
8. Disconnect your phone and put it in USB debugging mode by going to Settings > applications > Development or something and check the USB debugging box.
9. Reconnect your phone. You dont get the options to choose a connection mode because of the USB debugging so dont panic.
10. Disconnect phone and turn of USB debugging mode.
11. Reconnect phone and choose Kies this time. Some drivers will be installed. If "MTP device" driver fails to install keep your phone connected and let Kies have a go. You should see Kies still trying to find the driver so wait for it. It just might make the stuff to work.

People with 64-bit systems that installed the driver should have full acces to kies now with your Galaxy S. At least that's what the feedback was from most people on another forum with this solution.

People with 32-bit systems (like me) might get it working. For me it didn't. I still cant get the "MTP device" driver to work properly. At least i don't have the flickering issue anymore and my phone does say it's connected although Kies doesn't show it is. Hopefully the driver will work fine some time soon but i guess i'll have to wait on a big update from samsung of some kind. Any way hope this helps some people.

UPDATE: With the formatting of the internal sd i got my Galaxy S working on my folks' XP 32-bit computer again. Now they only have to put the firmware updates on there. I know there are some (just check http://samsung-firmware.webs.com/).

UPDATE 2: IT WORKS. found the 32bit driver. Install this and everything should work ^^.
I'm so happy i could cry Sticking out tongue 5 days it took me. The problem is that the newest "samsung USB driver for mobile" doesnt work with the phone. These are the older drivers and they do work. If there comes an update for kies and suddenly your phone doesnt connect again you probably should just reinstall these drivers and it'll work again i gues...
Anyway here's the link.

Boot back to Windows XP SP3 on the same machine, and the same version of Kies insists that it does not support the phone.

One step closer to identifying the problem: There seems to be a problem with the database engine that Kies tries to use. Apparently, Kies is unable to read/write database files, thus it cannot access the model database and ends up saying it does not support the phone, as it couldn't find a match in the database.

Furthermore, there should be database files like 00000001.dat, 00000002.dat, etc. created in %APPDATA%\Samsung\Kies, but on my Windows XP install, those are never created (though referenced in the registry), wheres on my Windows 7 x64 install, they are.

Now I found out how to start Kies in debug mode and make it spit out some debug output, but unfortunately the database interface isn't outputting any debug information... Crying

Geez, I actually figured it out! Back in 2008, I followed a workaround to fix a bad security hole in Windows, as described in this Microsoft Security Bulletin:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-078.mspx

So I unregistered OLEDB32.DLL - and this is the component that Kies relies upon to manage the devices it supports. After re-registering this DLL, Kies is now finally working in my Windows XP!

I just bought the galaxy S i9000 yesterday. my first Samsung mobile and tried to connect it to the pc. Can't get it to connect. Installed Kies, de-installed, all the advices mentioned etc.

Well I hope someone of Samsung reads this.
If I can't get it to work today, the thing goes back to the shop and will buy another mobile, but not something from Samsung again. I did read in reviews there were problems in connecting it to a computer. Never thought it would be this hard.
Nowadays when you buy an apparatus that expensive I think I have the right to expect it to work flawlessly. Connecting it to a computer, after installing some kind of program on the computer, should work without much problems. Just my opinion as a programmer.

OKerrin,

After reading your post it's time that I finally chime in.  I've had my Samsung Galaxy S (GT-I9000) for almost 10 days now, and that's about how long it took for me to get it all set up the way I liked it.  During that time I have rooted the phone, flashed it 3 times to different firmware builds, and have run a few "hacks" to get it just right.  Now that it is set up, I have to tell you IT IS THE BEST HANDSET I HAVE HAD TO DATE!  I'm coming from a BlackBerry so it's like coming from a Ford Pinto to a Ferrari.  I totally agree with you that when you spend this much money on a device it should just work right out of the box.  It doesn't matter what manufacturer you go to, they're all going to be flawed in one way or the other.  Hang in there and work through this because when you do, you're going to be very happy.  I even have iPhone zombies looking at my Galaxy S with wide eyes saying, "What phone is that!?"  No screen out there can compare to this thing, and the apps are ridiculous.

With all of that being said (and keeping with the title of the post of not being able to connect to Kies), I had problems connecting to Kies myself in the beginning.  Once I was able to do so, I was totally disappointed.  As you already know it doesn't sync all four of the essential elements from Outlook.  And when it does it chops off a lot of your information.  I found that spending all of the time trying to get it to connect to Kies, was a waste of time.  I ended up going with Google Apps to do an OTA sync from Outlook (Contacts and Calendar) to the Google "cloud", and then I sync my Notes and Tasks via USB through Companion Link 4.0 (USB).  It turned out to be the best way to get 95% of the information that is stored in Outlook to the Samsung.  It seems convoluted but it really isn't.  As I make changes to contacts or calendar entries in Outlook, the moment you hit save, it automatically sends the change to the Google servers.  No hitting a sync button or anything, just updates in real-time.  In turn your phone hits the Google server and grabs that info.  So it's a trip, you make the change in Outlook and within 30-60 seconds its on your phone.  Doing the sync with with Companion Link is easy too.  It's always running in the background so you just plug in your phone and hit the sync button on the phone, it takes about 10 seconds to sync just notes and tasks.  I have about 400 files between the two.

If you still want to connect to Kies I'm going to ask that you give me some information about your configuration.  (Everyone should be doing this by the way in this post, post up all of your specs so it helps us and everyone else.)  Here's an example of how I would post my specs.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (In your case this could be Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3, etc.)
PIM: Outlook 2007 (In your case this could be Lotus Notes, Address Book, etc.)

Kies version: Kies_1.5.1.10071_32

Samsung Galaxy S build information:

Firmware: 2.1update1
Baseband version: I9000XXJE6
Kernel version: 2.6.29 umts_scm@S1-BUILD05 #2
Build number: ECLAIR

Everyone should post their specs and configuration so we all can compare notes so to speak, and be able to help one another out.

Okay, so you see my specs, this is what I did to be able to connect to Kies.  (And I have been able to connect with all kinds of different set ups, but I'll post this one.)  Get to a clean slate first.  Uninstall any and everything you have that is "Samsung" related on the machine.  I use a program called "Your Uninstaller 2008" because it goes in and cleans out the registry also.  After you uninstall everything (all the drivers included), do a restart of your machine.  Now since I have a Windows 7 64 bit I had to download and install the Samsung drivers specific to the OS.  I found the download online, and it was the biggest pain to download it.  I'm sure it's here on the forum somewhere.  (See reply #51 in this thread.)  I installed the Samsung 64 bit drivers, and didn't even have to do a restart.  On the Galaxy S I went into Settings/About phone/USB settings, and I selected Kies at the very top.  After that I started up Kies.  Once it was started up I plugged in the USB cable and waited for Windows to recognize it and install the drivers.  After it installs all of the drivers.  You'll see "Connecting..." inside of the Kies window.  Within a few seconds you should see your phone in the top right hand corner, with options to sync media or sync to Outlook.  If for some reason it doesn't recognize your phone, while still in the Kies window, just unplug your phone, wait a couple of seconds, and then plug it back in.  Sometimes it takes a few times.  After that you should be connected.

By the way, the version of Kies that I have (1.5.1.10071_32), my understanding is this is the latest version.

So I hope that helps for now.  Clean slate, install your drivers (or in the case of not having a 64 bit machine, just install the latest version of Kies_1.5.1.10071_32. or see reply #51 in this post where you can get the 32 bit drivers and do the install first), and then open up the program, make sure your USB settings are to Kies in the phone, and then plug it in.

At some point I'm going to post in another section about how frickin' tight this phone is!

Now since I have a Windows 7 64 bit I had to download and install the Samsung drivers specific to the OS.

By the way, the version of Kies that I have (1.5.1.10071_32), my understanding is this is the latest version.

And that version does, in fact, include 64-Bit Windows 7 drivers, so there is no magic at all there - just install this Kies version and it'll work. At least it did for me (in Windows 7 x64 Ultimate), without any extra driver package.

I am having a problem with kies and my Galaxy S.  When I first installed last Tuesday night it worked fine, I copied a lot of music Wednesday and have not used it since.  Today when I tries to use it, kies kept saying connecting device.  It connected after a phone and pc reboot and left alone.  I guess Windows was doing its media autoplay scan.  And now it wont reconnect.

Is anyone else having the same problem?

Windows Vista.

Thanks

If you just want to transfer files, I would suggest connect with just "Mass Storage". It will shows as removable disc like any other flash drive. I have also switch off "Start Kies automatically when device is connected", so I can totally by pass kies as I found it annoyed when it pops up everytime when i connect the phone.

Once you choose connect using "Mass Storage", you will also need to mount the disk before your computer can detect it. This can be done by pulling down the notification bar > USB connected > mount.

I also had problems connecting my Galaxy S to my Laptop running Windows 7 Professional 32Bit

My soloution that worked for me was ,

Install Kies from the samsung website.

On phone goto

Applications --> Settings --> Applications --> Development --> Turn on USB debugging (press ok on the popup)

Open Kies --> Plug in phone to USB

Windows installs the drivers (remember to look on the taskbar for the flashing icon waiting for you to give permission to kies to install drivers), then once all drivers are complete, kies should say cannot use phone in debugging mode on the right hand side.

EDIT - AT THIS POINT YOU NEED TO go back to Applications --> Settings --> Applications --> Development ... Unplug the cable, cick Turn off USB , then literally plug the cable back in VERY QUICK, otherwise it wont work.

Remove usb from phone and go back to Applications --> Settings --> Applications --> Development --> Turn off USB

Close all open apps on phone and return to main screen and plug in USB cable
, Kies then should connect (see picture below)

Cheers Dave Happy

Thanks a lot stealth2k, I followed your solution and now I'm able to sync my contacts to Galaxy S right from the PC. Nevertheless, the Samsung Apps is still not functional, I think because Android phone is not yet supported. On the other hand, firmware upgrade/Tethering is now enabled so it's definitely a great leap forward.

Thanks!

Hi all, sorry i didn't read all answers, so i don't know if there is already a solution...

I had the same Problem... i was downloading the Kies Version 1.5.1.10062_7 and tried to connect to the galaxy S, it didn't work.
I got always the answer "Drive is not ready..."

After playing around i solved the Problem by:

1: uninstalling Version (1.5.1.10062_7) and installing this Version:
http://rapidshare.com/files/404315417/Kies_1.5.1.10062_42.exe.html (sorry after download u have do rename it into ".exe" )

Because this Version doesn't try to update all the time...

2: Disconnect Phone
3: Start Kies -> Menu -> Reinstall Devicedriver (i guess "Reinstall Devicedriver" or something likely should be there... i've the gerrman Version Wink Wink )

4: Set USB on Device to "Samsung Kies"-Option
5: !!! Turn of and restart the Device!!! <- Important
6: connect the Device to PC AND
!!! if there is a message in the NOTIFICATION BAR, agree the question!!! <- most important Wink Wink

(NOTIFICATION BAR is the Bar on top of the Screen)

Now it should be able to connect to Kies without an Error-message...

If u don't see the content of the internal or ext. Storage try the Refreshbutton below the devicephoto in the Device-Explorer...

Hope i could help somebody...

(If somebody wants to try with the 1.5.1.10062_7 Version, here's the link)

Love the phone, but really pissed off with this situation.

I had Kies_1.5.1.10062_7.exe and the phone connected ok on both my laptop and desktop.

upgraded laptop to some version that he autoupdater wanted me to update to, which took forever as it seemed to be downloading hundreds of dll's all individually rather than a propper update package,
the settings -> update page still says it's 1.5.1.10062

my desktop PC stopped connecting to the phone then (win7 x4)
my laptop PC was still working, but slow to connect. (win7 x64)

I have not installed any other new software, I have not updated any other software (win update is set to manual only even)

a few days later like everyone here I can't connect my phone at all, I've tried the solutions suggested here, nothing is working yet Crying

I tried with all the Kies versions mentioned in this topic and all methods.

The way I made it work (in both XP and Windows 7 32 bits) with both latest version of Kies and older ones is:

1) unmount internal sd (I do not use an external one)
2) format internal sd
3) restart phone
4) connect (Kies was running on my PC, no need to restart PC or anything)

When I did this, the MTP Application stopped closing on my phone and it printed connected quite fast. After that, Windows installed successfully the MTP driver and Kies saw the device after few more seconds. I think the main problem is the MTP Application on the phone.

Anyway, my phone is with firmware XXJF3 (it came with it) and Kies reported that I cannot update this version (I hope it only means they did not release any official firmware newer than mine).

Hope this helps.

firmware: 2.1-update1
baseband ver: i9000XXJF3
kernel: 2.6.29umts_scm@51-BUILD05 #2
(vodafone)

I've tried deleting the CLSID  named folder
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, even cleaning up in between wit DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES environment variable.

i've removed and reinstalled a few versions of kies now (staying with 1.5.1.10071_32

I've hunted about for a _64 build assuming the suffix was for x86 systems (no luck)

I have not yet tried formatting my internal SD card. What exactly will I lose if I do this (mp3 collection is obvious, what else?)

This really is infuriating as just 3 days ago it was working fine and nothing had changed, I was occasionally checking for firmware updates in the vein hope of froyo turning up sooner rather than later.

Sometimes the CDC Abstract Control Module (ADM) will install, sometimes it wont
the MTP USB Device never works (MTP app flickers on and off on the device, just like everyone else)
