I feel as if this is two steps forward and three back!  So this is what I did:

I have Mass Storage selected
Went to SD Card and Phone Storage
Selected Internal SD Card
Unmounted SD Card
Mounted SD Card
Plugged USB to computer
For the first time my computer recognises external drives - E and F – woo hoo!
From My Computer under F Drive there are 4 folders - Android, Bluetooth (empty), DCIM (empty) and SD (which is empty and kind of looks greyed out)
Note:  Kies did not start automatically

My problem is that all my contacts on the sim from my old phone got corrupted when putting the card into the Galaxy - ie the contacts are all there but the names I had them stored under have got all mashed up - It makes no difference if they are sorted by first or last name, they are a mess.  What I want to do is get them onto my laptop so I can edit and then export them back to the phone. Am I right in assuming that Kies is the only software that I can manage this with?  I would also like to sync my Outlook but this function is also greyed out when Kies is open. I have the latest version of Kies installed – should I uninstall and re-install?  Is this going to make any difference ??  The bottom line is that I want to be able to edit, save and sync my contacts and then Outlook.

Can you please suggest what I should try next?? It is so frustrating as I do like all the other aspects of the phone 

Thank you

Have you registered a google account? If yes, you can go to your gmail and your sim contacts should be automatically sync to your gmail contacts soon or later.

Yes, I have set up a gmail account (set to auto-sync) but my contacts from my sim are not in my gmail account and I am not sure how to make it happen.  I can see how I can import/export from another email account to gmail but I want to be able to edit the contacts from my Sim.  Sorry to be a numptie can you please tell me how?  I know there is an option to import/export from and to SD card but I do not have one installed.  I just want to be able to edit the contacts that got mashed.  That said this doesn't fix the original problem with Kies.

Kies will only start if you choose "Samsung Kies" when plugin the USB.

Once you have set auto-sync on, it will do it automatically. It might take a while depends on how big is your contact lists. Have you also checked the google account( under 'Manage accounts') if the sync has completed? The reason I asked about google account is because if you can sync your contact to google, you will be able to fix your contact in gmail or even export to or sync back to your outlook. Another way is borrow a sd card somewhere so you can extract your contact to csv file and fixed it with excel or outlook.

OK.  Understood.  My Outlook contacts are rather large so maybe that's why not.  At this stage I am not too concerned about Outlook but want to sort out my Sim Card Contacts - they are not the same as what I have in Outlook and at this stage would prefer to keep the separate.  Thanks for the tip re .csv port to excel.  I may try that but probably not til weekend as wasted so much time on this already!

However, when is Kies going to work with the Galaxy X - is Samsung doing anything to fix this problem ????

Hi all, sorry i didn't read all answers, so i don't know if there is already a solution...

I had the same Problem... i was downloading the Kies Version 1.5.1.10062_7 and tried to connect to the galaxy S, it didn't work.
I got always the answer "Drive is not ready..."

After playing around i solved the Problem by:

1: uninstalling Version (1.5.1.10062_7) and installing this Version:
http://rapidshare.com/files/404315417/Kies_1.5.1.10062_42.exe.html (sorry after download u have do rename it into ".exe" )

Because this Version doesn't try to update all the time...

2: Disconnect Phone
3: Start Kies -> Menu -> Reinstall Devicedriver (i guess "Reinstall Devicedriver" or something likely should be there... i've the gerrman Version Wink Wink )

4: Set USB on Device to "Samsung Kies"-Option
5: !!! Turn of and restart the Device!!! <- Important
6: connect the Device to PC AND
!!! if there is a message in the NOTIFICATION BAR, agree the question!!! <- most important Wink Wink

(NOTIFICATION BAR is the Bar on top of the Screen)

Now it should be able to connect to Kies without an Error-message...

If u don't see the content of the internal or ext. Storage try the Refreshbutton below the devicephoto in the Device-Explorer...

Hope i could help somebody...

(If somebody wants to try with the 1.5.1.10062_7 Version, here's the link)

I just can't get Kies to work. I got it as far as the drivers install correctly, but Kies insists "This device is not supported by Kies." As a result, I can't synchronize any contacts, exchange messages nor download apps, and trying firmware upgrades yields that the servers are not available. Some widgets actually show the "GT-I9000" but say "This device does not support this service."

Now I'm wondering if that's possibly because I have no SIM card in my phone yet (got one ordered, but the o2 guys are slowww to deliver)? Has anyone who got Kies to work correctly ever tried if Kies also works when there is no SIM card in the phone...?

P.S.: If you set your Kies region to Korea (either when installing Kies, or later by editing the registry), Kies will upgrade to version 1.5.1.10062_68, which is not available in other regions yet...

Sadly your fix doesn't work for me.   If Mass Storage is selected my laptop recognises the phone but Kies does not open automatically. So still cannot access the contacts on my sim.....  I have uninstalled Kies for now and will try and download a different version of Kies to see if that works

FWIW, I ended up installing Kies 1.5.1.10071_32 in Windows 7 x64, and it finally recognizes the phone there (in Kies mode, the Mass Storage mode "solution" is in fact useless).

Boot back to Windows XP SP3 on the same machine, and the same version of Kies insists that it does not support the phone.

So apparently some silly programming bug can prevent Kies from recognizing the phones it supports under unidentified circumstances. As screwy and fat as the software package is, it seems near impossible to figure out what problem it has... Should be renamed to DAPS = Dumb-ʌnl Piece of Software.

When i re-checked the dutch site where i got my kies software i saw there was a new version downloadable there. 1.5.1.10071_32  to be exact. After deleting all the stuff i could find from the older stuff from kies and samsung drivers. I installed this "latest" version. And of course NOTHING happened. Still have same problems. I run Vista Home Premium 32bit and have had nothing but trouble with Kies and the MTP driver that just wont work. Weird thing is that about 2 versions ago (when i also couldnt connect to my own vista comp) I could connect with my folks' XP 32bit comp. After fiddling around with my own vista computer now i cant even connect the phone to my folks' computer. Also my phone flips out when i connect it to kies and changes from the home screen to an "MTP application" an back the entire time. It didn't do that at the start (when i could also still connect to my folks XP machine). Did Kies corrupt my phone or something. I WANT THIS FIXED. Anyway i'm really starting to get pissed off by samsung. And when i sent a mail with all the troubles and stuff i tried to make it right they referred me to a payed helpdesk. **** you Samsung. They'd better get there **** together. Cause this is just a load off crap that shouldn't happen when you launch one of your big main products...

Anyway this is of course blowing off some steam but i'm allowed to after about 3 days of trying to get this crappy program to work. Anyway i hope people will try to get new solutions caus pretty much all the stuff that's on here i tried and failed.

Conclusion:
Galaxy S = AWESOME
Kies SUCKS MONKEYBALLS as do the software developers at Samsung if they dont get this to work properly soon.

Also my phone flips out when i connect it to kies and changes from the home screen to an "MTP application" an back the entire time.

That happens when there is something wrong with the SD memory. I reproduced that by unmounting the internal and external SD cards, then connecting the phone to the PC in Kies mode - flickering MTP application issue. After remounting the SD cards, the MTP application was working again.

So try unmounting and remounting the internal and external (if installed) SD cards and see if that fixes this particular problem. However, even with the MTP application not flickering on the phone, it may still not work.

Oh yeah, and to top this: Since installing Kies on my Windows XP SP3 machine, I sporadically get crashes of a service process, which breaks all sorts of things (such as the Windows XP theme, reverting to the old Windows style). Only thoroughly cleaning the machine from all the Kies junk seems to fix that...

I've done the unmounting and remounting thing bunch of times. With android options as well as a pull-out of the external sd card it self. Didn't work. Still flickering ARGH...

For Phone internal memory, I have to connect with Kies. I tried mass storage but its only allow me to connect to the extenal SD card.

I just install Kies at office and have the same problem again(only works on mass storage connection but not kies). I then go settings-> SD card and phone storage -> under internal SD Card, unmount and remount it, plug in the USB cable, it then appears to reinstall the driver on my computer, after that, kies start up automaticly. Hope this help.

Oh man, this really helps.. it works. Many..many thanks
