What's the maximum size external SD card I can use for the Captivate?

32GB is supported but you will need a Class 8 for it to be fast.

anything lower and your phone will crawl around.

I would rather go for a 16GB class 6 it's cheaper and it's relatively fast.

Although I never really used th External Card I never filled my 8 GB.

From the icon it looks like an external card and when I look on my external card the applications are in the .android secure (or something like that) on my SD card. You don't really have any control over where that stuff goes. Perhaps if there was no external card slot, Android would move stuff to the internal card.

I have an 8 gig card and have used up 5 because I don't move media onto my internal storage, just in case I have to do a reset. Once programmers get used to the idea of using the external storage you might find the need for a bigger card.

What Version are you running.

AFAIK Eclairs is buggy on the issue and the only version it worked well with was JPU+.

Yeah you are on Froyo.

It doesn't move to external because then it would need a way to deal with the software when the Memory card is removed.

Are you sure about this? From what I've been reading I get the impression it IS supposed to move to the external SD card.

For example the last post in the below thread says that.

In my experience all of those "move to sd card" apps are mostly just wrappers to the built in API that 2.2 provides. App2SD for example shows you exactly the same interface to move the app as the built in functionality when you go to "manage applications". (Either way both methods throw exactly the same error) and see the "move to SD card" button.

I installed App2SD again and looked at it very closely... the top menu shows three sections:

On Phone (movable apps located on the phone)
On SD (movable apps on the SD card)
Phone Only (apps that cannot be moved)

The interesting part is that the "On SD" section shows the current size of the SD card and sure enough it's referring to my "internal SD card" - which seems to indicate you're correct and that it should work even though I have no external card.

I've tried using  App2SD but I've also done the exact same thing as you. Settings --> Applications--> Manage Applications (select an app) --> Move to SD card. Both methods throw the same error. (I suspect that the App2SD just uses the built in functionality because the interface is identical)

So you're saying now that it goes to the EXTERNAL SD? IronSingh says it goes to the Internal SD card.

Do we have our terminology confused?

In my mind there are three types of memory in the captivate:

Internal Memory (basically the system partition)
Internal SD (essentially a logical partition of the built in memory)
External SD (an optional inserted micro SD card which I do not currently have)

If as IronSingh says "move to SD" should go to the Internal SD memory than it means I have a problem with my phone. If as you say it goes to the external SD then the error I'm getting is understandable and normal because I don't have an external SD card.

See the confusion?
