Hi,

On my SGS I am not getting USB mode selct popup when I connect USB to PC. I just get a beep indicating the phone is charging. It used to work earlier , after Camera repair by Samsung Service Center it was intermittetent but worked twice. Now totally unusable except for charging.

1. I tried all settings of USB mode (kies, media, mass storage, ask)
2. Tried  USB debugging ON/OFF.
3. Using Samsung USB cable
4. PC port is fine tested with other USB 2.0/1.1 devices

As a result the phone is shown as unknown device. Hardware enumeration failed. Does it indicate hardware fault in phone USB? Is such problem of USB rectifiable at mobile service shops ? (Samsung service center takes inordinate time to repair)

please help and suggest what I could do before giving it for repairs.

with best wishes,
Rajesh

I had two problems with USB connection

1. USB connection not detected by the phone - I cleaned microUSB connector of phone using alcohol and toothbrush 3-4 times after some gap. This removed the corrosion of microUSB port pins and the phone sharted detecting USB cooncetion as well got detcted properly by Windows Vista as "Samsung Composite device" (and not as unknown device). At this point Galaxy S started getting recgnised and mouted and USB drive in " mass storage mode"

2. Still Kies was not able to make connection to phone in "kies mode". The "connectiing" icon use to keep rotating endlessly". After 3 hours of troubleshooting including reinstall, reinstall drivers, removing files with log file name extensions,  I found that Windows defender (antimalware protection) service was slowing the detection of the phone.  I went to control panel -> classic view-> windows defender and disabled the real time scan and rebooted. This resolved the issue.

Please check if Windows defender or any other realtime antivirus protection is causing the malfunction.

with best wishes,
Rajesh.

Hi Rajesh  Happy
I'm facing the same problem as you are. After connecting the phone to the laptop, it starts 'charging' but the 'USB connected' message doesn't appear.  Undecided
Were you able to find a solution to this problem?

Have you installed the "SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe",supposed you are on Windows.

I'm assuming it must be pre-installed on my phone because my phone has only recently started showing this problem. Earlier the USB would connect without any such problem.

Hi Ashi,

First check in the phone what is USB mode setting. It is in settings-Wireless and network-USB settings. Keep it in "Ask on connection".

Now connect phone to PC USB and you should get  a 3 line pop to select USB mode. If you are not getting this popup , there is corrosion of USB port pins. (there are few post in this forum and elsewhere to explain the same with photographs). In this case, switch off phone and using Alcohol/Sprit and toothbrush, clean the internal of MicroUSB port especially the pins taking care not to use excessive force. Similarly clean the pins on all USB connectors (PC USB, both side connectors of USB cable) Do not expect immediate result I had to do it three times over two days. Take care not to damage the pins in process.

If you are getting USB mode selction popup, select Samsung Kies (some times you have to press return key to come to home screen then only USB gets connected). Your phone should say "connected" and press "home" to quit Samsung Kies.

Please let me know once you get this message.
with best wishes,
Rajesh

You wanted to say ...on my PC instead of ....on my phone, didn't you?
Have you used Kies and then uninstalled it some time ago?
You need this driver for connecting your phone to the PC on Windows.

Hey Rajesh.

I was going to suggest installing the Samsung drivers on your PC as saszseb did. And also, if you search this site, you will find a lot of issues with Kies, it's always CONNECTING and never connects.

I overcame this by uninstalling Kies and the drivers, rebooting PC, reinstalling drivers, rebooting PC, then connecting only in MASS MEDIA mode.

Hope this helps!

Akhtar.

P.S.I can't remember if I reinstalled the drivers or just attached the SGS and let the PC do all the work...

@Rajesh
My phone is Samsung Galaxy 5. After going to Settings, there's no option such as "USB Settings".
However there's an option Settings>SD Card, USB Mass Storage.
But it doesn't show any "Ask on connection" option. It only shows the storage information on phone and gives an option to "Unmount SD card".

But earlier whenever I connected my phone to the PC, it always 'asked on connection'. Now it doesn't. So, I guess, the USB port pins are corroded?  Undecided
So you're suggesting I clean the pins using alcohol/spirit and a toothbrush? I hope I don't damage the phone in the process. Wouldn't it be risky?  Undecided

@saszseb
I never installed Kies. I had read the reviews and I preferred not to install it.
I don't remember installing SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe on the PC.
(I thought you were talking about some phone software  Sticking out tongue )
So, I don't remember installing that .exe file, but I think it automatically gets installed the first time one connects the phone to the PC.
But, what are you suggesting? Should I especially install it, this time? If yes, then how?

Thanks, by the way.  Smile

menu>settings>application>Development>tick or untick "USB debugging".
No. You should install this Samsung USB driver yourself.
