Try usb debugging: settings>applications>development>usb debugging.

Also try different usb ports or maybe even a usb hub.

Best no-fail way would be to get a micro sd adapter and a card reader and drag and drop files directly.

Are you on USB debug Mode?

Goto Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debug make sure it's unchecked.

Peace.

That's just what I was going to suggest LOL so I'm going to ask if the device is set to the Samsung launcher before connecting.

Hmm that might work, if I remember correctly this is a kies solution isn't it?

I am more inclined to it being a hardware issue, either the PC or the Phone.

Old machines with only 1.1 / 1.0 USB standards won't detect the phone, 2.0 ports can get damaged or degrade over time to 1.0. Well it's not exactly like that but what happens is that one or more of the 7 pins required to make a 2.0 connection gets damaged which results in port being recognized as a 1.1/1.0 Port.

Peace.

Yes Kies but can't hurt as something to try. I do connect to mass storage with LP in use.
