I've started having the dreaded frozen phone/ black screen issues for a couple of days now on my i9000. It all started out of the blue after two weeks since i bought the phone. It felt strange because i had no previous problems (even the gps works)  and i never dropped it (at least not before this started happening). At first i was sure it was a software bug but then i noticed something strange: if i squeeze the phone (index and thumb) just below the samsung logo the screen starts flickering and even turns off (the reverse is also true. .. With the screen turning on). This even brings up the phone from its " black-screen-almost no button responsiveness-with the two bottom soft keys lighting up" state that i have read before. It also explains why it sometimes (randomly) stops working: my leg probably squeezes the phone since i keep it in the trousers pocket.  I would like someone to confirm if it works on their phone (with the same screen problem) because this means that it's probably a bad contact at fault.
NOTE: don't crush the phone but give it a firm squeeze.

Hey Happy
Squeezing the phone does nothing for me.
I've had my phone for little under a month, and it has done the black screen of death on my a few times, today being the latest.
I've never droped it, it's not in my pocket.
Yesterday for example it was just on the table next to me, I got a message, picked it up and the screen was black.  Nothing happened when I pressed the buttons, I pressed all the buttons, I touched everything, but nothing happened, no lightup on the buttons.....nothing.  But when I used another phone to call mine, it rang !  I heard the ringtone, but the screen was still black !
I had to remove the battery for it to work again.
Please someone, if you know a way to fix this, let me know, this is really annoing !  Love my phone, just not this !

1. Have you upgraded your phone?
2. Backup your data!
3. Try to do a factory reset!

Just to let everyone know, i returned the phone and got a refund, not a new phone. I'd rather stick to an old Nokia 1110i and a laptop Happy
I just think all these new super-smartphones are not at a viable technological point, yet, as you can see from all the problems that are being reported. My malfunction might have just been bad luck but i still find that the fragility, cost and limited functionality of such devices outweigh all the advantages.

Gerda: Sorry for the late reply. I hope you'll find a solution. I'm no expert but it could be a software issue, although that's what i thought about my phone for 2 weeks. I really do think that more of these screen issues are caused by failing/bad contacts on the screen circuit board rather than being 100% software issues. You should use your warranty before trying any other solution !
