Please try a Kies Virgin Machine.

"This version of the device cannot be updated"
Means that there is no update available for your phone. Did other Orange Contract Phones get the update yet? Call Orange and ask them.

Peace.

I meant try it on a Machine that Kies hasn't ever been on.

What did Orange say?

Kies is very temperamental try another machine just in case.

There has been success with a hard reset of the phone in some cases.

Peace.

Ok.. I've actually tried it on 3 computers now, 2 desktops and a laptop - it didnt work on any of them. My own desktop has recently had a fresh re-install of Windows 7 Ultimate and a fresh download of the latest version of Kies installed as well - this didnt work either...

So.. I have just got off the phone to Orange Tech Support and lucky me!!! I have one of the original first batch of handsets, unbranded and unupgradeable... yep... the JF3 version of the firmware IS NOT a version that can be upgraded.

Orange have said that it is a known issue and the only thing that they (and Samsung) can do is have my phone sent to Samsung and have the firmware flashed with the new version which from then on WILL (apparently) be able to be upgraded for future releases of the Android firmware.

Trouble is, my handset most be posted to Samsung and then returned with a turn-around time of around 14 days  HUH?

The only other solution is to find an appointed Samsung service center with qualified Samsung techies in store that may  be able to flash my phone while I wait but the guy at Orange said he thinks they exist in perhaps TWO Carphone Warehouse stores in the entire country.. my closest is possibly Birmingham.. about 2 hours drive away!

Happy days... lol... of course I could try flashing it myself or taking it to an 'un' authorised service center myself and get it done at MY expense and which of course would invalidate the warranty I have.

Lol

Any ideas???

Ok.. update to the above..

Orange now say that they and Samsung are working on a fix. Apparently the issue is with the Kies software not recognising the firmware version of the handset I have, because it is one of the earliest versions.. apparently.

They are aware of it and will.. at some point soon.. be releasing a download/fix/updated version of Kies, to get around this.

So.. sit and wait longer. Unless there are any other/better/quicker solutions???

I mean, at this rate, I'll be ready to upgrade to a new handset before I get to upgrade my firmware!

well it's upto you. How comfortable you are with flashing your phone.

Read What is flashing? in my Sig.

See if that makes sense if not ask questions.

Maybe I can clear some doubts.

Hmm.. not that comfortable with it as I dont fully understand it.

The last thing I want to end up with is a handset that wont work and have the warranty invalidated so neither Orange nor Samsung will sort it out.

While it seems straightforward enough reading your instructions and I am fairly used to applying cracks and the like.. there are always times when things dont work how they should and thats where I get stuck.. not knowing what to do in the event of things not running smoothly...

In the past I have applied cracks to software and trial and error eventually gets it working. Trouble is, I'm nervous of damaging or bricking my handset completely and being stuck with it that way... my only option in that event would maybe be 'losing or damaging it' and making a claim... not ideal though..

Whats the risk? How great are the chances and where do I go in the event of problems? I cant really afford to be without my phone at all.

Thanks..

Luckily Kies is such a crappy Piece of software that it alone cause Samsung legitimate grief.

and in such if something was to happen to your phone while flashing it you can very easily claim Kies f'd your phone.

This is ofcourse if something goes wrong which is very very rare.

The only cases that exist are the ones where the instructions were not followed properly.

What you need to do first is Make sure you can Enter download mode.

if you can then I recommend you first root using SuperOneClick and download TitaniumBackup so you can get a comprehensive backup of your phone.

Back your stuff up and go ahead with that guide.

Peace.

it does absolutely suck, whilst the rest of the world are enjoying 2.2, the most keen people in the uk to get the phone are the 1s who ironically cant update. any eta of when orange will be fixing this so we can update?

Carriers update their software on their own Accord.

You would need to ask Orange when they will release it, but seeing how SGS is going to depreciated soon I don't see a point in them releasing 2.2.

Orange have released 2.2

Its an issue with the Kies software and Samsung are trying to fix it for/with Orange.

Kies will not recognise the earliest handsets as being upgradable.. the earliest platform was updated significantly and thus was rendered 'unstable'. Kies will only recognise later versions for upgrade. Once fixed, (apparently) it will allow the earliest platform (on Orange) to be upgraded.

As stated.. its us keen people, looking to get the 'new phone' quickly that suffer - again.. it happens all the time. they rush the release, we rush to buy it, it sucks, they update/revise it, we're stuck with the shitty one until they manage to sort us out.. story of my life i'm afraid - it's the price you pay for wanting the latest stuff as soon as its available.. not that its right, but its how it is....

In that case you can just go and get it done manually from their service center

It looks like Orange/Samsung have sorted this out as my JF3 JF3 JE5 firmware SGS has just been updated to JS7 JPY JS1 via Kies.

Try it now!
