Hi there,

Not too sure if i'm in the right section but my friend has a problem with his Galaxy S and i was wondering if anyone has came across it before and found a fix.

Basically his phone started to vibrate whilst he was on a call and when he hung up his phone crashed. After he switched it off/on, he found that the phone had gone back to its default settings, he lost the internet (although can still use wifi), can't receive calls but can make them and lost the ability to set a screen lock. Also when he powers off, it no longer gives the options of flight mode, silent etc.

He does however still have all his apps and contacts.

I did get him to check the firmware version, its 2.2 which i believe is froyo and not too sure this is helpful but I also got him to check the APN (2 options (selected) and (not selected)). This matched the settings on my HTC so im guessing this is ok.

His phone isnt rooted or anything and he's had it about a year now.

I did find this which is very similiar to what's happening but no definite solution

My initial thought was to update the firmware. If he were to update the firmware will he lose everything? (I'll get him to back up anyways)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on how you plan to update the device. If you're using Samsung's Kies, it does all the backing up and restoring for you. If you do it manually, you will most probably lose everything.

What I suggest, if you're looking to upgrade and you've done to peace with losing data etc, move all contacts to Google (if you haven't done already), backup all your apps and SMS if you want to (Titanium Backup, SMS Backup & restore). Then Odin flash 2.3.5/6/7 (all files found on SamFirmware).

Once the device has booted up, format everything including going into RECOVERY MODE and wiping/resetting everything there.

This way you'll have a fresh and up to date device ready for use. As quick as is used to be from brand new and quicker still with the upgraded firmware.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS take advantage of having Google on your phone! Save all contacts to GMail and they never get lost, wiped, replaced etc.

Titanium Backup for apps and data. SMS Backup & Restore for messages.
