At the moment it's on Firmware version 2.2

Kernel version 2.6.32.9

But it runs very slow - crashes - freezes and won't respond.

It also won't connect to Kies via USB.

Is there a third digit to the firmware version? And did Kies backup your data? Also, in your USB settings, is Kies selected?

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS take advantage of having Google on your phone! Save all contacts to GMail and they never get lost, wiped, replaced etc.

Titanium Backup for apps and data. SMS Backup & Restore for messages.

You have ICS and not Gingerbread like hank_scorpio and you also have a i9100 and not a i9000.

I run a i9000 with ICS and all I've ever seen is USB debugging in Developer options. That box is always checked and I'm unsure what unchecking it does so that might something for you to look at.
