Most definitely upgrade to 2.2 Froyo UGJL2. It is very stable, with many improvements over 2.1 Eclair, and i personally havent come across a single issue since its release. Just back up first and make sure to factory reset after your upgrade, you will enjoy your phone even more.

Ok.  I'm a bit confused and not sure now what I should do.

I'm still running 2.1 update 1 and my phone seems to be working ok and I am on the fence about upgrading to froyo 2.2

Casz are you saying that if we are happy using the 2.1 it's not worth the upgrade to 2.2?  I know that there are some things that are much better when upgrading but is it worthwhile if we are not really tech savy and know how to do all these things properly?  I don't really want to root and customize so much as I am afraid of causing more harm then good to the phone and I don't want to void the warranty of the phone.

If I do decide to update i know I have to back everything up I have been reading around and perhaps I missed it but can we back up everything with kies (sms, photos, videos, apps, contacts etc.) when the phone is not rooted .  I have read about people using applications like titanium back up pro and others but I'm not able to do that without rooting. Any advice on how to back up or where to read about it would be greatly appreciated.

I still am leaning towards upgrading but don't want to mess things up as I finally have started to become a little familiar with operating this phone.

Please help the undecided... lol

Upgrading isn't hard to do as long as you can connect your phone to Kies; you don't have to root or anything after you upgrade. I've found the upgrade moves a few menu items but it's not anything like when you first started using the phone and had to look for everything. I don't advise buying a device in the hopes that the OS will be upgraded to do what you want but the latest OS usually means the most functionality for that platform. The upgrade will be there when you are comfortable enough to do it. I took the opportunity to get rid of some apps and configure things a little better. With the upgrade, Social Hub is a great way to manage all email and social media so if you have multiple accounts I would upgrade just for that feature.

So before I move forward with 2.1 to 2.2 upgrade I want to make sure I understand how ...

- Am I using Kies to upgrade?
- Does Kies know where to get the file or do I have to direct it to the file (I'm with Bell Canada)

I tried backing up but Kies does not recognize my device once I connect it with USB cable ... should it not pick it up automatically? It appears to be trying but goes on foever with nothing happening.

Updating is not that hard from what i have seen and read.   When i connect to kies there is an icon on the lower right corner that tells me there is a firmware upgrade available. As far as i am aware all you have to do is click to update and it should start by itself.

My biggest concern is making sure i back up my apps, contacts, photos and sms etc.  Is there an easy way to do this all at once without rooting and using one of the apps from the market?

Since your posts to this thread kept me hopeful during my wait, I figure the least I could do is post my progress for those still waiting...

- dropped the phone off at a Bell store in Guelph on Dec 20.

- got the "Phone is in transit to store." message today (Jan 14).

Considering the work days lost due to the holidays, I'd say it took just over 3 "normal" weeks to get back (assuming the transit time is a day or two).

I'll report back with details when I pick it up.
Thanks!

I made a list of apps and moved photos to an SD card just in case. All my contacts and calendar info is on google. I didn't lose any data with the update (except sms) You may be able to use Kies to back up SMS

@DDC - Not bad service. I got mine back in 10 business days.

Ok so I finally took all the advice and updated to 2.2.  One more question, hopefully I'm not being too much of a pain.  After the update I am reading that you should do a factory reset.  What does this do?  Well I understand it will wipe everything clean but is it necessary to do it?  I had a quick look to see what the update looks like and it appears I did not loose any information that I can see.  I see a few changes and additions but don't know if the factory reset is ultimately necessary.

So I guess my question is just whether or not I should do the factroy reset and start all over putting everything back on my phone.

Thanks for the help.

It's always a good idea to factory reset. You data is not affected, just your downloaded apps. This allows your apps to be reinstalled properly for the new operating system. If you don't want to factory reset, be aware that if there are any forced closes or glitchy goings on you'll need to factory reset at that time.

So best to do the factory reset then.  I will do but need to figure one thing out first.  It appears that I can not get onto the markeplace after updating to 2.2.  Do you think this would be fixed with the factory reset?  I don't want to do the reset and loose everything and then not be able to get my apps back on there. I don't have a lot but a few good ones which I would like to keep.

A factory reset should fix that problem. I know I resisted since I upgraded as soon as I got my phone back from Bell - didn't install anything. Even so, I eventually factory reset after I had installed stuff. Be aware that programs that don't appear in Market have not been approved for Froyo.

Yup, took 2 business day to travel to the store.

Looks like they replaced the board and updated to JL2.

All's well, and I'm happy to be back in the Android arena!

Thanks all!

Welp.........I've lurked here for a bit and just joined to share this experience.

Bought Bell SGS new in Sept 2010, 2.1, bricked just before Christmas.

Bell gave me POS Window's phone as loaner, SGS returned fixed 10 days later, still 2.1

A few days later, 2.2 released, updated.

2 weeks ago, phone bricked AGAIN.

Bell sent me Brick 3 2 nights ago, brand new, in box with 2.2 UGJL2,...lag....soft buttons work by themself or not at all.

Called and screamed at Bell....they wanted to send me SGS brick 4. No thanks, said I want out of the SGS or i'm paying out and going to Rogers for a GOOD phone. Bell HTC Desire Z on its way.

I wish you all luck with your SGS but between Bell and Samsung, I think for all it's bells and whistles it's a POS (in my experience). Not sure if the HTC will match up, but if runs problem free for more than a month it'll be off to a good start compared to the SGS. I must say, I loved the phone.....WHEN IT WORKED Evil . It's a shame really.........

Bell said they don't even want the SGS (Brand new and working.....kind of) back when I get the Desire. What's that say???? Ummmmmm they have boxes and boxes of these paper weights at the Bell mothership and don't want anymore. Just wanted to share my frustration and disappointment and this seemed like a good place.
